Year 2 Design Realisation: Research

WGSN Trends

In connection with the previous project 'Tailoring Processes' by learning tailoring skills enables me to understand the process and techniques used. For this project i had to research Spring/Summer 12 tailored trends on WGSN. By researching current tailoring trends enable dme to be aware of current trends around and how i could interpret as well as create, new trends.

As you can see on my research pages i looked at a range of tailored garments from skirts, trousers, jackets .etc. To look how tailoring trends are adapted through a range of garments. To further develop my research a shop report was completed to understand the different market levels.
Key Detail: Pleated skirt design, step hem layered detail
Key Detail: Sleeveless, draped, waterfall collar jacket
Key Detail: Gathered neckline with front pocket flaps

Shop Report

As part of the research for Design Realisation a shop report covering the three market levels:

Lower Middle Market- Topshop and Primark
Middle Market Level- Monsoon
Upper Market Level- Reiss and Whistles

I compiled together a detailed shop report featuring drawings, documenting the key detail on the pockets, collar, seams .etc. This helped me to understand, how different market levels use  detail to represent their brand. By loking at a range of market levels helped meto understand each brand in order to help me decide which market level i was going to design for.
I decided to design for the Lower Middle Market: Topshop as i understood what their brand was all about and the key detail featured within their garments.

For this topshop shop report page i was looking at the two-tone contrasting collar featuring a black PU trim and a polyester waistcoat. I thought the two-tone contrasting fabrics worked really together and i liked the concept of combining two materials together to create an interesting collar design.

This is an example of another shop report sheet i did on monsoon focusing on my drawings of the front and back including the detail featured within the dress. As well as understanding the detail they've used to create a classic , simple silhouette with little hints of pleated detail and a vent at the bottom of the dress.

This is another example of a shop report page i've done on monsoon, i choose this jacket in particular as the colour block trend monsoon have used stood out to me. I thought the combination of a dark colour mixed with a pastel colour creates this classic colour blocking style, instead of the usually brightly coloured reds, oranges, purples for example. This more toned down look is still on trend for an older woman.

By drawing out my shop report was a successful way of documenting my shop report visually by repsonding to it instantly. I only took a couple of photos to show detail close up, that was a bit difficult to draw or looked better to be seen as a picture instead of being drawn out. By doing a shop report has helped me to understand new trends, how different market levels present their trends through different styles, aimed at their customer profile.
